GST and Tax Registration for Small Businesses

August 2023

Understanding your tax obligations as an Australian small business owner is essential to staying compliant and avoiding penalties. This guide covers the basics of GST registration and tax requirements.

Do You Need to Register for GST?

In Australia, you must register for GST if your business has a turnover of $75,000 or more per year (or $150,000 for non-profit organisations). If your turnover is below this threshold, registration is optional but may still be beneficial.

What is GST?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a 10% tax on most goods and services sold in Australia. As a registered business, you collect GST from customers and pay it to the ATO, minus any GST credits you're entitled to claim on business purchases.

Business Activity Statements (BAS)

Once registered for GST, you'll need to lodge a Business Activity Statement (BAS) with the ATO, typically quarterly. This reports your GST collected and the GST credits you're claiming.

Getting an ABN

Every business operating in Australia should have an Australian Business Number (ABN). It's required for invoicing, GST registration, and identifying your business to the ATO and other organisations.
